Excessive, senseless sexual inhibition can stem from our personality, our psychological make-up, our introversion. More important is our parental upbringing and patterns, and what we learn from our immediate cultural environment, our peers. Other reasons include previous relationship disappointment, failure, unsuccessful dating. Youthful taunts, bullying or humiliation, whether from one's own or the opposite sex, can also make matters worse.

I have left the most important one at the end of the list, the one I experience most often with my patients: religious guidelines. Excessive moral rules and prohibitions can often lead to self-doubt and guilt. Nothing can implant in the human psyche inhibition and inability to dissolve like religion. This can be useful if one wants to hold oneself back until marriage.

However, in my experience, shyness and guilt tend to remain even after marriage, which only a Christian sexologist can understand, deal with and resolve.
